Director’s Statement

This film is as much my wife Kimberly’s as mine, if not more so. For years, we’ve talked about the lack representation of Black & Indigenous women in fantasy, especially among leads. We’ve been fans of the genre forever, so with Mintrix, we decided to create the complicated heroine we wanted to see. I’m very aware of the abundance of certain types of characters in popular fantasy franchises, how they don’t often represent women like her. It’s been an incredible joy and responsibility to put all my effort into creating a story that would do that, and I knew I couldn’t attempt it alone.

I was thrilled to work with an incredible team to bring this original fantasy story to life. Kimberly and I have worked on a lot of projects together, starting when we collaborated on student films in college. With this project we wanted to develop a creative, inclusive space centering women, BIPOC and queer representation both in front of the camera and throughout the crew.

We shot this project in Los Angeles on an approved SAG-AFTRA contract during the strike, providing our cast & crew with a few days of non-struck work at a time when much of the town was dark.
